Robert Smith Surtees was an English novelist, editor, sports writer, and a creator of many comic personalities. He launched his own magazine entitled New Sporting Magazine to which he contributed the comics, and is best known for his novels Handley Cross (1843) and Hillingdon Hall (1845).
