Edward Tuckerman was the son of a Boston mercahnt of the same name, went to Union College and Harvard Law School (1839), Harvard Divinity School. He later became a famous botanist. He was Professor of Botany at Amherst from 1858 until his death in 1886. Hi field was lichens. Although never very robust he was an intrepid explorer; Tuckerman's Ravine on Mount Washington was named in his honor.
