Near the bottom of page 386 in this copy of John Updike's award-winning novel, the protagonist's son, carrying a copy of the daily newspaper, asks the assembled characters about a 1970s quiz in the issue: "How many of these people can you identify? Renée Richards, Stephen Weed, Megan Marshack, Marjoe Gortner, Greta Rideout, Spider Sabich, D. B. Cooper," and Harry Angstrom (the eponymous "Rabbit") answers, "Renée Richards was Patty Hearst's boyfriend."
The previous owner of this book was Dr. Scott Greenbaum, whose partner in his ophthalmology practice was Renée Richards, the groundbreaking 1970s transgender tennis player. A color photograph of her, with an unidentified woman, is held loosely at front.
Rabbit is Rich — the third in Updike's Rabbit series — won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the American Book Award, and the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
