While Wells is best known for his many novels and short stories, he was almost equally prolific in the nonfiction arena, penning multiple works of political commentary, criticism, history, and biography. He was also an avowed proponent of socialism, and the "world revolution" he espouses in this short book was one aimed at "universal peace, welfare, and happy activity." In 1930, Wells revised and expanded it with an additional subtitle, A Second Version of This Faith of a Modern Man Made More Explicit and Plain, and again in 1931 under a new title, What Are We to Do with Our Lives?. A final version was issued in 1933, and it also served as a blueprint in turn for Wells' 1940 book, A New World Order.
