Motherwell was the general editor of documents of modern art and he has inscribed this copy to a noted French architect and his wife, "For Dollie & Pierre Chareau (1883–1950)/ with affectionate respect/ Robert Motherwell/ NYC/December 1944." Chareau has fled France to Morocco and then to the USA. In the late 1940s, Chareau completed two architectural projects in the United States. One was a house and studio for artist Robert Motherwell in East Hampton, Long Island.
