First edition. Frontispiece engraving of the author from the Rowse crayon sketch, with tissue guard; this was the first book to include a portrait of Thoreau. 319 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original dark green embossed cloth, decorated gilt title on spine. Brown coated endpaper, with small abrasions. A few small holes on ffep, light wear at extremities, spine lightly faded. Inscription of Annie Dunfree, 1864 on title and ffep. In a quarter green morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. Borst A3.1.a.; BAL 5236 and 20111.
