ODNB summarises Cadogan's achievement's thus: "His manner was often boisterous and loud and his dress ostentatious. He also had an unfortunate tendency to teasing levity that could give offence on occasions. However, Cadogan had enough diplomatic skill and courtesy to carry off many delicate and complex missions during the War of the Spanish Succession. He was equally valuable in the difficult period following the death of Queen Anne, when the Hanoverian hold on the throne of Great Britain was not secure."
