Alison writes explaining that while he is always "most willing to do what I can to assist you", the week he had chosen coincided with H.R.H. and Gerneal Nicholson coming down to inspect the Engineers.
Having served at Lucknow (where he lost his left arm), Ashantee, Egypt (where he was commander of the Army of Occupation) and elsewhere, Alison became General Adjutant in 1885 and a General in 1889. The letter is accompanied by an original photograph of Alison.
