John A.Brunner(1868-1948) was born in Scotch Plains, N.J. His early training as an artist was under the supervision of Count Zalitsky in Westfield, N.J. He subsequently studies at the Cooper Union in New York City and thereafter travelled extensively in England, France and Germany. Known for his skill and delicacy in the execution of the medium of watercolor, he was also renowned as a proficient wood carver, and today his work is to be found in many private and public collections. This particular composition, with its themes of tranquil water and shady foliage is quite informed by English watercolorists of the period, among whom Brunner must surely have studied and socialized during his time in that country.
