This monument was the mark the burial place of Uncas. This author also wrote biographies of Red Jacket, Joseph Brant (“best biography of an American Indian”) and Sir William Johnson., While these biographies are all in Howes, this work is not.
Stone delivered the bulk of this discourse in Norwich, Connecticut on July 4, 1842 on the occasion of the dedication of a monument to Uncas. Uncas was the first chief of the Mohegans encountered by British settlers in Connecticut. An appendix contains a general history of the Indians of New England, including the Pequots. Stone also composed biographies of Joseph Brant and Red Jacket.
