The extreme clipper ship "Typhoon"was built in 1851for the China trade by the firm of Fernald & Pettigrew of Portsmouth, NH. It was first launched in 1851 under the command of Charles H. Salter -- evidently the forbear of Commander James H. Salter, who authored this journal. The "Typhoon" was famous for its speed and power. In a memorable race around the Horn in the summer of 1851, the "Typhoon" defeated the competing clippers, the "Sea Witch", and the "Raven."

As the "Typhoon" was sold to a British Company in 1863, this is probably its last journal under an American command. Appropriately, the final entry made by Salter is in Newport Harbor, April 26, 1863.
