Three-quarter length portrait of the actress, standing before a silver lamé backdrop. 1 vols. 35 x 27.7 cm. (approximately 14 x 11 inches). Van Vechten blind stamp at lower right. Verso docketed in ink giving the name of the sitter, date of the photograph, and Van Vechten's reference to negative ("IX L : 16").

Superb, large photograph of the actress (b. 1910), who won back-to-back Academy Awards for best actress in 1937 and 1938 (The Great Ziegfield, and The Good Earth), wife of playwright Clifford Odets, who soon after retired from Hollywood films, disgusted with the roles she was being offered.
