Attractive copy of one of the most famous and best-selling gothic romances of the last 200 years, reprinted, translated, adapted, and dramatized innumberable times during the nineteenth century and into our own.
Anne Radcliffe was already well known as the author of A Sicilian Romance (1790) and The Romance of the Forest (1791). The publishers offered the unprecedented sum of £500 for the rights to The Mysteries of Udolpho. This second edition was issued the same year as the first, and a third edition the following year; the novel was swiftly pirated in Dublin (3 vols., editions in 1794 and 1795) and Boston; and soon translated into German and French.
