Blow (1817-1875), a two-term U.S. Representative from Missouri, better known as an abolitionist who assisted Dred Scott.
Scott had been enslaved by Blow's parents but sold to Dr. John Emerson, who took him to Illinois and Wisconsin Territory (where slavery was prohibited by the Missouri Compromise) between 1834 and 1838. Blow encouraged Scott to sue for his freedom and helped finance the lawsuit. Justice Taney's infamous 1857 Supreme Court decision in Dred Scott v Sanford rendered the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and at its essence denied the legality of African American citizenship in the United States. Scott, however would eventually gain his freedom after Dr. Emerson's widow gave him to Blow, who manumitted him.
