Upon the death of James Madison, his stepson, John Payne Todd, sold copies of Madison's letters to the publisher J. C. McGuire. The present published Correspondence is a selection from the letters written by Madison including letters that relate to the interpretation of the Constitution. Only a limited number printed in large paper for private distribution. In the Menzies Catalogue, Joseph Sabin describes it as “exceedingly scarce.”.
