First edition, second printing; December 1947 (first printing in June 1947). Illustrated: portrait frontispiece, photos and map of the Annex, and facsimile pages of the diary. 8vo. Grey card covers printed in red. Light sunning to spine, pages lightly toned but generally very good, in dust jacket with some rubbing around edges and loss to the head of the spine and front panel near spine, with rare wraparound band. In custom clamshell case.

The first book edition of the Diary of Anne Frank: " the single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust" (The New York Times Book Review). Her father, Otto Frank, the only survivor in the Frank family, found the document upon his return from Auschwitz. He translated it into German and typed up a transcript to send to Swiss publishers, who largely ignored it. One of the people who read it was Jan Romein, a historian and journalist on the board of De Nieuwe Stem ("The New Voice"), who wrote an article about it for the Amsterdam daily Het Parool (started as a resistance paper during the war). It was first published as a fragment in De Nieuwe Stem before being expanded and published as Het Achterhuis (The Secret Annex).
