Unique example of an ephemeral work of four leaves on Thomas a Becket: Argumentum in beati martiri Thome Cantuariensis Archiepiscopi vitam. The types are attributed to Gian Stefano di Carlo in a description from the General Theological Seminary, where this work had been preserved.
The first printed life of the martyr is Paris, 1495.
This early life of Thomas à Becket is bound after an Augustinian monastic work: Augustinus de Pavia. Propugnaculum canonici ordinis. Collation: π² a-f⁸ A-D⁸ E⁴ (-E4 blank). Woodcut initials. [Florence: Stephanum Papiensem, 1512]. The printer is identified by a printer’s colophon on the verso of leaf f8; it is the only copy of the Propugnaculum reported in OCLC, though 9 locations are noted in Edizioni italiane del XVI secolo; with a leaf of Latin manuscript verse at the end.
