Inscribed on ffep at top "John Camp Williams for G.D.S. Nov., 30, 1918 and adjacent in Williams hand "For H.L. Batterman Jr." and below in AEN's hand:
G. D. S. (George D. Smith, famous American Bookseller 1870-1920) once said to me 'Eddie, you have done book-collectors as well as booksellers a great service with your amenitiers.' I laughed at the time but he seems to have been a prophet-and he was a great book-man. A. Edward Newton 17 April 1931."
Williams, Bannerman and Newton were all serious book-collector and Smith was only hitting his prime when he died at 50. If he hadn't, Dr. R. would not have succeded as much as he did.
