Whitman’s publisher David McKay writes to the Reverend L.M. Powers of Somerville at the suggestion of William Sloan Kennedy (1850-1929), in search of a copy of the 1871-2 edition of Leaves of Grass, asking the Reverend to name his price or to accept in exchange a finely bound copy of the Autograph Edition of Whiman’s Poetry and Prose that had been intended for an exhibition. McKay mentions that he has a personal presentation copy of the complete, “and need the edition you have to put in my collection”.
