Souymille's book is the first important modern book on the subject, and is considered the first illustrated book on backgammon. It was first published in Avignon in 1738; and again in this second edition 2 years later after Hoyle began to codify the rules for the English-speaking audience.
As Soumille says in the Preface "I am not the first to write on the subject of the game, but I do believe that no one has precede me in my aim of aiding the imagination by visual means...that is to say, by accompanying the instructions with a series of images which clearly represent the moves..." The woodcuts are incredibly graphic works of art, and defined the look of backgammon books to this day.
