Milton’s Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio (“A Defense of the People of England”), stands “as the official reply of Parliament to the Defensio Regia of continental scholar Salmanasius, which was written in reponse to Milton’s Eikonoklastes … Milton relished the opportunity to confront such an eminent figure as Salmanasius, whom he considered a worthy oponent, and he always thought this was his most important prose work” (Wickenheiser). After the Restoration, Pro Populo and Eikonoklastes were ordered to be burnt.
