An attractive image of the good grey poet.
In his day books, Whitman recorded receiving photographs from Philadelphia portraitist Gutekunst in March 1880. This is a later phototype of the portrait, dated to the later 1880s from a signed example in the Berg Collection at NYPL. The image also appears as the frontispiece in the 1889 pocket edition of Leaves of Grass.
