First edition, issued as the fifth book in the 'Rosa Abbott Stories'. Illustrated frontispiece; 256 pp. 12mo. Uncommon early detective fiction. Publisher's green cloth, gilt spine. Owner's very early ink inscription to front flyleaf (dated "Dec. 25th, 1869"). Binding has light wear at extremities of spine and tips of corners, rear hinge has a small tear at top, few pages of text lightly soiled and foxed, else a very good, bright copy. Not in Hubin, 'Crime Fiction, 1849-1980; not in Wright fiction.
