The monsters "foiled" by Essolube (Standard Oil) included the dreaded "Karbo-nockus", "Moto-munchus", "Oilio-gobelus", "Moto-raspus", and the "Zero-doccus." Each is described on verso of the original envelope among the "cast of characters", concluding with "A Motorist, his wife and child": "Pursued by these fierce and oil thirsty Moto-Monsters they are in constant danger of losing thei rcar and their pocket-book from the everlasting attacks of these ravenous beasts. Then along comes Essolube – and spam – away gallop the Monsters, leaving our heroes to motor happily ever onward."

This puzzle was part of the Standard Oil advertising campaign that started in 1930, and lasting a few years tafter, which featured Dr. Suess' (Theodore Geisel) trademark artwork.
