The first edition of the chronicler's biography of St Francis, written in 1399 by the Italian Franciscan Bartolomeo da Rinonico (Pisa, d. 1401), and presenting an extended comparison of each aspect of his life with that of Jesus Christ. Ruth Mortimer says that ''this representation of the material of the text in the form of a tree [on verso of the title] was part of the original manuscript submitted by Bartholomaeus for approbation in 1399'' (Harvard, It. n.44). An important work of Franciscan historiography, here in superb condition bound in 18th century red morocco and with provenance to an important Russian collector.
