Madame de Maintenon founded the Maison royale de Saint-Louis, considered to have greatly influenced the demands of the Society of Revolutionary Republican Women, the first women's political interest group founded in 1793. Maintenon’s treatises on education linked gender equality to educational reform through the enforcement of universal primary education, encouraging officials and philanthropists to establish neighborhood primary schools that accepted poor young girls.
