A tale of valor, enchantment and derring do, enhanced with engraved title page and illustrations by Stephen Gooden. Moore much admired Gooden, who had illustrated Moore's The Brook Kerith, and the last words he ever wrote (published posthumously as A Communication to my friends) were in praise of Gooden, and, particular, one of the engravings in this very book: "A great artist truly--the greatest among living artists, no one to compare him with except Dürer himslef. And looking at a proof of a drawing he had done for Peronnik the Fool, a fierce, blustering cock, screaming...how he screams! a raucous scream, as if nobody knew except himself that day was near..."
