The plates of this rollicking Doctor Syntax spinoff are by Charles Williams, chief caricaturist for the printseller Fores, and they are as fully irreverent as the Rowlandson (and Gillray) plates which were his inspiration, and all the more so for their Gallic setting. As for the text, "it might conceivably be genuinely by Combe ... " (Abbey).
