Inscribed on ffep in ink: "Major General [Winfield] Scott, with the respect of his obt. sevt., The Author." Scott achieved the rank of Major General during the War of 1812, which Dix also served in at the age of 14. Dix would go on to a long career in politics, and was a U.S. Senator (New York) when Scott undertook his campaigns in the Mexican War. A fine association.
