A fun and fascinating look into the creative process of Samuel Michael “Sam” Simon (1955-2015), a dynamic and versatile force in American television who won nine Primetime Emmy Awards, eight of which were for his work on the iconic animated sitcom, The Simpsons.

Sketchbook One still has it’s Stanford Bookstore price tag and dates to 1977, Simon’s final year at Stanford, when he worked as a newspaper cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle and The San Francisco Examiner, before becoming a storyboard artist at Filmation Studios. Sketches include sports-themed cartoons, comic strip ideas for submission to Playboy and Cosmo magazines, and various other characters and story concepts.

Sketchbook two dates to circa 1980-1982 and includes the loose pages of concept art for “Wags” a cartoon about a group of talking dogs with a related page of concept notes. Other drawings in the sketchbook include concept sketches for “Best of the West” a short-lived ABC sitcom where Simon worked as a writer in 1981; cartoon renderings of Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd from the hit sitcom “Taxi,” where Simon served as executive story editor, showrunner, producer, and writer from 1981-1983; and several personal drawings of ideas for a friend’s birthday party invitation.
