With a typed letter signed of Rockwell Kent to Oscar Lewis, secretary of the Book Club of California, voicing his strong displeasure with the illustrations by Julian Links for this edition. Dated May 13, 1930, the letter reads, in part: "I am glad that I took the trouble to call the matter to your attention, for my complaint does put you in the position of calling the printers to account for what is unquestionably a breach of professional ethics. I am sorry that it is not the policy of the Book Club to supervise more carefully the production of the books that appear within its imprint. I feel the book of Thel, irrespective of the plagiarism involved in the illustrations, has been very badly illustrated"
