Bryant offers his opinion on a potential edition of the poems of one Mr. Thompson, a Southerner: "If Mr. Thompson's poems had been published in his lifetime I think they would have been readily sold, in as much as he was well known, more particulalry at the south ... I think the time which has elapsed since his death has made some difference –– new names having occupied the public attention ... I wish I could answer with more confidence. I can only simply say that I think the success of an edition of his poems doubtful...."
