Reading in part: "Enclosed is the letter of Walter Scott's, which I have just found in looking over my papers...." Irving also conveys letters of Francis Jeffrey (editor of the Edinburgh Review) and "Mr. Campbell the poet." Irving had contributed a biograhical note to an edition of the works of Thomas Campbell. In 1817, Irving had visited Scott, bearing a letter of introduction from Campbell. Scott had read Irving’s History of New York and welcomed the American author very warmly.
