A working reckoning in Irving's hand of relative word and page counts in his work. "Bancroft first vol 34 lines of 42 words}1428 words on a page ... WI ms. 24-36 865 words per page; average of my ms. pages in 1 vol 966 ... about 805 of my ms pages make 500 specimen pages ... my pages average 966 words on a page" etc. The figuring possibly refers to Irving's Life of George Washington (1856-59) as per speculations by Andrew Myers on an envelope in which the sheet was earlier inserted (not present). Bancroft had also done a biography of Washington, and praised highly Irving's version.
