Original green cloth gilt, t.e.g, board edges bevelled, minor stains slight rubbing. Modern slipcase. Provenance: Maj. Gen. P. H. Major-General Sheridan's copy, with his name stamped in gilt on front cover within a gilt laurel wreath topped by an American Eagle. The autograph poem begins: "When the summer leaves were yellowing, / And the Autumn fruits were mellowing, / In the golden month of August, / Through the mountain gaps we pass'd, / Where the vines around us cluster'd, / In the Valley we were muster'd, / In the Shenandoah Valley, / Under Sheridan, at last!"
Duganne was a Boston author whose verse and prose won great acclaim in his day from contemporary critics such as William H. Burleigh: "Mr. Duganne's lyrical powers are characterized by a nervous energy, a generous sympathy with humanity, a wonderful command of language, and an ardent hatred of wrong and oppression in all their forms..."
