Axel Amuchastegui was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1921. He was self-taught and developed his own technique using Chinese inks and brushes. His work appeared in a number of publications including Pajaros del Mundo (Birds of the World, 1959), Studies of Birds and Mammals of South America (1967) and Vida Amorosa de los Pajaros (Love Life of the Birds, 1974) by Carlos Selva Andrade. He gained a worldwide reputation, aided by a number of beautifully produced large-format works published by the Tryon Gallery of London.
