Item #251342

An extremely early letter from the 31-year-old Channing “on order” from the Committee of the Bible Society of Massachusetts:

“… Dr. Morse has communicated to me a part of your letter to him in which you express your desire to be furnished with Bibles for distribution… I now have the measure to forward to you twelve Bibles for this purpose. We will thank you to communicate to us any information which would assist us in distributing the Bible. We are always happy to receive applications from ministers. Will you mention this to any of your brethren who are situated in parts of the country where the Bible is wanted …”

Letters from the great Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist are rare on the market (only one at auction over the last 30 years); of this vintage, they are practically unheard of.
