The first and second part of Hudibras were first printed in 1663; the third part first appeared in 1678. The three parts were not issued together until 1684. Hogarth did these small illustrations for Samuel Butler's mock-heroic Hudibras, published here for the first time in 1726 but executed earlier, led to an ambitious project to publish by subscription, through the publisher Philip Overton, twelve large plates, also in illustration of Hudibras, unequivocally of his own invention, with monumental figures and learned allusions to Italian art.
