Excellent and wide-ranging letter from the great Arabian explorer and author Charles M. Doughty, mentioning that he began to read the translations by his correspondent's son, discussing Nigeria and mentioning a Capt. Gordon, "who is going out this week to Northern Nigeria as a Kaimakam." Doughty discusses Palmer's "superannuation from a responsible office, to be able look back upon many years of good work ... and one would become gradually reconciled to a change of habit & new & complete leisure. And I can imagine you with your cheerful disposition & quiet humane tastes to be able, as Isaac Walton, to be happy every day & everywhere." Doughty concludes with news of his family and fond recollections of their visit to Kirby, "Believe me, sincerely yours, Charles M. Doughty."
