James arranges a meeting:

" ... I have, after all. -- for all sorts of hindrances and reasons -- not yet left London; but meanwhile I hear from Albemarle street that you are also in town. May we not therefore meet here? -- since we couldn't in Paris ... "

According to the Library of America edition of James NOVELS 1896-1899, "In November 1897 James arranged with Henry Loomis Nelson, editor of Harper's Weekly, for the novel's serialization, and it appeared in that periodical between October 1, 1898, and January 7, 1899."

As this brief note would indicate, Nelson was no doubt looking for a contribution from James as early as May, 1897.
