This memorial was part of an ongoing dispute between New York City auctioneers and merchants over the taxation of auction houses. Retailers claimed that auctions were inconsistent with regular trade and injurious to the interests of the city. The auctioneers respond by asserting that they help conduct the commerce of the city, and that they combat monopolies and speculation. Still true today? Shoemaker locates two copies of this pamphlet (DLC, NjP). Rare.
