In a letter to Norman Douglas in 1909, Conrad wrote that the pain caused in writing this novel made him "envy the serene fate and the comparative honesty of the gentleman in gray who lived in Dartmoor." However, financial comfort was at hand when Pinker sold serial rights to the North American Review and the English Review, which commenced publication in December 1910. Conrad made several small changes to the text that appeared in the English Review for publication in book form.
