Rosen writes in his introduction that his intention in this work is “to treat of Napoleon as a theatregoer, as a critic and patron of the drama, and as a familiar of playwrights and players. I intend to show that he was himself a master actor on important occasions and an artist in histrionic effects.”

The extra plates in this volume include several portraits of Napoleon as well as various literary figures: Shakespeare, Voltaire, Racine, and Corneille; as well as Roman emperors, French statesmen, and Josephine.
