Ten pieces by A.J. Liebling on the what the jacket copy calls the flora and fauna of Broadway, including “The Jollity Building”
This copy with an interesting provenance: the bookplate of Jane Tiffany Wagner, with her gift inscription to Jean Stafford, “This is the book / We can’t wait for you to write about ‘Warren Hall’ Love Jane and Al”.
Jean Stafford (1915-79), author of The Catherine Wheel and other novels, was Liebling’s third wife. They met in London in 1956 but were only free to marry in April 1959, after his second wife Lucille divorced him. Shortly before that date, he inscribed this copy at the foot of the flyleaf, “And from Joe to Jane 1//25/59.”.
