Item #371514

Pope’s immortal satire appeared first in Miscellaneous Poems (1712) in two cantos only. It first appeared complete and as a separate book in 1714. Pope's satirical tale of the Baron snipping an unguarded lock of Belinda's hair is innocuous fare on its face, but is weightily charged in Beardsley's interpretation. The illustrations, inspired by 18th Century French Rococo engravings, brought Beardsley widespread acclaim that had eluded him during his career to date. Whistler, who was known to dislike Beardsley's work, called him a "very great artist" after seeing the portfolio of these drawings.

The deluxe edition is rare, and his designs show to great advantage on the Japanese paper, his characteristically sinuous lines appearing in a rich, lustrous black against the smooth cream parchment.
