Item #367193

A choice memorandum from the final part of Arthur Rimbaud’s adventurous years in Yemen and Ethiopia, where he worked variously as a merchant, coffee trader, and arms dealer. Barely two decades after Richard F. Burton entered the city of Harar in disguise and at considerable risk, Rimbaud first visited the trading city in 1875. Here, during his third trip, he has accepted money from Ato Tesamma, a tribal leader, on behalf of arms dealer Armand Savouré. This is one of a series of receipts in his transactions with M. Savouré through 1890 (the final accounting was for some 9,000 Thalers). Rimbaud returned to France in ill-health in 1891 and died at Marseille.
