Allusions to Melville run through the essays of Borges, and in his essay on Hawthorne (in Other Inquisitions), Borges writes, “we have already entered the world of Herman Melville, of Kafka — a world of enigmatic punishments and indecipherable sins”.
A nice copy of this edition of Borges’ translation of Bartleby the Scrivener, first published by Emecé in 1943 (Borges also translated Kafka).
