Signed and dated by Miller on verso that this is a 1950 photograph by an unknown photographer, "possibly Man Ray." This is likely wishful dating on Miller's part, judging by his age in the photograph it was probably taken during his days in Paris. Another hand has put down 1942 as a likely date. It's dated as such (with photographer listed as unknown) in The Life of Henry Miller, by Jay Martin (Capra Press, 1978). 1942 was when Miller had to leave Greece and settled in California, where he met Man Ray, another American expatriate returned by the war. There are no known Man Ray portraits of Miller in which Miller is seated.
