Freud's first significant scientific contribution, and third published paper, a study of evolutionary aspects of the spinal column of the lamprey. Freud's research documented evolutionary processes identified in the physical structure of the fish he was examining under his microscope. This work predates Waldeyer's 1891 publication of his monograph on the neuron, but Freud's pioneering research was overlooked. Ernest Jones observed, "It was not the only time that Freud narrowly missed world fame in early life through not daring to pursue his thoughts to their logical - and not far off - conclusion" (cited in Gay, Freud: A Life for our Time, p. 36).
