Gustave Flaubert is best known for Madame Bovary (1857), Salammbô (1862), and Sentimental Education (1869). He transformed fiction through his pursuit of le mot juste (“the right word”), and his approach to writing influenced later writers, such as Henry James, Marcel Proust, and James Joyce.
